European and International Organizations

The course examines the rise, role, and function of international or intergovernmental organizations, with special emphasis on those operating in Europe.  Primary emphasis will be given to the United Nations and European Union, but others may be examined, including the International Court of Justice, the Council of Europe, International Criminal Court, Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe, the World Trade Organization, International Monetary Fund, World Bank, Organization of American States, African Union, and others.  Attention will be given to  both the internal organization and functioning of these entities and how they interact with nation-states, with international nongovernmental organizations, and with other actors in the international environment.
